GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The Grand Junction airport landed a new direct flight to Mesa, Arizona two months ago. Saturday, another new flight came to town.
The inaugural direct flight from Chicago to GJT touched down just before noon. It got the ceremonial dousing from airport fire trucks. Passengers on the nearly full plane were greeted with authentic Chicago-style hot dogs at the gate.
The flight is once a week on Saturdays, for now, and officials hope to keep adding direct flights in the future.
“One of the cities on the west coast, we have data that says that's one of the biggest destinations, most traveled destinations, from our airport. So getting a direct flight out there would serve people," Chuck McDaniel, GJ City Council Representative to the Airport Board said.
Officials with the airport said United Airlines saw the demand for the flight, and took the lead on making it happen.
