GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The new Orchard Mesa Middle School is standing, and starting to take shape.
This is the last full school year that students will spend in the old Orchard Mesa Middle School.
Work crews are about at the halfway point in the project, have built up the frame, and both the top and bottom stories are in place.
Workers are now putting in the floors, and hope to have the roof of the building put on soon.
But they aren't just building up. Demolition work on the old school has to be done to make room for some of the new school's features.
"We are tearing down one of the buildings on the site, to make room for the track. We are also going to tear down the old school, starting in February of 2020," said D51 Chief Operations Officer, Phil Onofrio.
The district says they hope that classes can be held in the new school during second semester of 2020.
