Crews battle fire in Fruita, old 340 bridge engulfed in flames

FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The Lower Valley Fire District says they responded to reports of a bridge fire in Fruita around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The old Highway 340 bridge was engulfed in flames.

Our crews on scene say the fire is about one mile east of Rimrock Adventures, off of Highway 340.

Fire Chief Frank Cavaliere tells us that the old Highway 340 bridge was on fire.

He says when crews arrived on scene they say they found camping supplies in the area from an apparent transient camper. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Highway 340, known as Broadway, has not been impacted by the fire.

That bridge was still smoldering as of late Tuesday morning, and fire crews are working to contain it.

The fire department also warned rafters to avoid river left under the bridge, because of falling debris from the fire.
