Connect initiative recreation trail in Montrose opens

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- People in Montrose are making good use of a new trail the city recently opened.

The new Connect Initiative Recreation Trail opened last week.

The trail goes directly underneath Townsend Avenue and Main Street. It stretches from the Colorado Outdoors building to the Rec Center.

Officials say they hope it gets people who don't have cars to their destinations safely.

"So without this trail, a lot of our population just plain can't safely get to get to the park system without driving. So, if you think about kids, parents trying to send their kids down Townsend Avenue, it's just not a comfortable thing to do. It can be done, but it's not the safest with you know, 15,000 plus vehicles a day,” says City Engineer Montrose Scott Murphy.

The project has been in the works for nearly three years.
