GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- It's been three years since Deputy Derek Geer was killed in the line of duty. Friday, we remembered the man who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"Your heart is just breaking for his family because it's so close to home," Mahea Rodriguez, a police wife in the valley, said.
For people like Rodriguez, it made her husband's job as a police officer seem that much more real.
"Being in a law enforcement family, those people are your family and so seeing their heartache makes it more real for you and it makes it feel a little more personal," Rodriguez said.
For others, it was a reminder to be thankful for our first responders.
"We're very appreciative by the job they do, they risk their life, they put their lives on the line to keep our community safe," Adam Gallegos, a Grand Junction resident, said.
