Colorado Gov. Jared Polis wants to use better-than-expected tax revenue to implement government-funded full-day kindergarten this fall.

Polis unveiled his supplemental budget proposal on Tuesday.

The plan includes $227 million so Colorado school districts can offer full-day kindergarten or stop charging families for it. Polis says many families pay up to $500 a month to enroll their kids.

Polis says free kindergarten for children is his new administration's top priority this legislative session. But he stresses that it's not a mandate for either parents or schools.

The governor is seeking nearly $26 million to implement his kindergarten plan by the fall.
