WELD COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) -- The conditions brought on by a blizzard that struck Colorado on Wednesday claimed at least one life. The man who was killed was out on the roads serving our state.

The Colorado State Patrol is reporting 52-year-old Corporal Daniel Groves was assisting a vehicle that slid off the road along westbound I-76 in Weld County. It was about 11:20 a.m. when John Carpenter reportedly lost control of his vehicle and hit Cpl. Groves while Groves was outside his patrol vehicle.

Cpl. Groves was taken to the hospital where he died. Carpenter is being treated for moderate injuries.

High speed in poor driving conditions is being investigated as a possible factor.

Cpl. Groves began his career with the Colorado State Patrol on July 16, 2007. He is survived by his partner of two years.

The case is under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol and all parties are considered innocent until proven otherwise. Charges have not been filed as of 4:18 p.m. on Wednesday.
