Colorado Gives Day: Central High School gets check for new Chromebooks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Central High School received a check for $10,800 on Tuesday. It’s part of Colorado Gives Day, a time to donate to your favorite charities. The money will go towards buying 30 more Chromebooks.

"I know in this class we use them every single day,” said Gia Colosimo, junior at Central High School.

The school has around 450 Chromebooks right now, but they say that simply isn’t enough for all the students.

"So whatever class needs them it usually goes to them so it's kind of hard to share them,” said Dante, sophomore at Central.

That’s why on this Colorado Gives Day, the District 51 Foundation donated a check to buy more laptops. The foundation is run solely by community donations.

"This additional set has just taken a little bit more weight off of trying to borrow from everybody else,” said Lanc Sellden, Principal of Central High School.

Allowing students to trade in their old textbooks for new Chromebooks.
"Since we as a generation have grown up with technology it’s extremely beneficial because we all know how to use them and so instead of having to flip through a textbook you can go look up an answer,” said Colosimo.

Students say this will help expand their STEM learning and definitely help prepare them for college.

"Math and science use them for experiments, social studies and English use them for different research topics, science also uses it for different research, art will use them for looking up different ideas for projects,” said Sellden.

"Our fundraising this year has grown over $10,000 more than last year and so we are just seeing a lot of people who also have a heart for public education and the difference that the foundation can make,” said Angela Christensen, Executive Director for the D51 Foundation.

So far the District 51 Foundation has given dozens of Chromebooks to several middle and high schools across the valley within the last year.
