GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT News)-- Nursing students at CMU got a hands on experience learning how to take care of those nearing the end of life.
Health specialists from HopeWest showed students what hospice care entails. Students learned first hand in the simulation lab at CMU the technical assessment skills that is takes to determine a patients health, while also learning how to have those hard conversations with family members. Students practiced with dummies in a realistic hospice setting to prepare them for these kinds of scenarios.
"It's good to have that conversation because it puts us on the same page with them and what is actually happening with their loved one. So we're speaking the same kind of language," says nursing student, Rachel Kotris.
The simulation lab at CMU is meant to help nursing students figure out whether hospice care is the right fit for them.
