FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT News)-- Thursday was the 29th annual Fourth of July Independence Climb at the National Monument. This year there were a total of 15 climbers who made their way up the rock. Members from the Mesa County Search and Rescue team and six guest climbers raised the American flag at the top of the monument.
Back in 1911, John Otto was the first person to climb the monument. Along his way up he carved in steps and metal posts into the rock, making the climb a little bit easier for others.
"To be able to scale that rock is amazing. It's kind of representative of everyone coming here and fighting for their freedom," says the wife of a fellow climber, Merrideth Sieckert.
The flag that was posted will be up there for about a week, so anyone can go up to see it over the next few days.
