ALS patient gets new van

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- An ALS patient is going home with a new van thanks to a local group called Dan's Vans.

ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, weakens muscles and affects physical function.

The organization sold a wheelchair accessible van to Mark Iddings, an ALS patient here in Grand Junction.

Dan's Vans sold the van to Mark for just a dollar, and he is the ninth person to own it. He can now get in a vehicle while he is in his wheelchair, and even sit in the front seat.

Mark is responsible for normal maintenance, like oil changes while the van is in his name, but he says it's a small price to pay for better mobility.

"This will be wonderful. I'll be able to see family and friends, on a regular basis, instead of just being at home the whole time pretty much, you know? Which I have been since I've been in a wheelchair," Iddings said.

Dan's Vans is run by Tom Keenan, whose brother died of ALS five years ago, and it was his wish that the van be used to help ALS patients.
