Skier suffers fatal accident at Colorado's Steamboat resort

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. - Authorities say a skier who died at Colorado's Steamboat Resort suffocated after falling head first into a tree well.

Fifty-three-year-old Frank Maimone of Philadelphia was found unresponsive Saturday at the bottom of an expert trail and pronounced dead at the hospital.

Coroner Rob Ryg says it's difficult to tell how long he had been in the tree well.

Falling into deep, loose snow can immobilize skiers and snowboarders and lead to suffocation. The National Association of Ski Areas suggests avoiding the bases of trees if possible, especially in deep snow or windblown conditions, and skiing or snowboarding with a partner.
