Male suspect in custody following standoff at 29 Mile Apartments

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KJCT)- Mesa County Sheriff's Deputies have taken a wanted man into custody after he barricaded himself inside an apartment at the 29 Mile Apartments in the 2900 block of Orchard Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

Kelsten Chessani, 28, was arrested following an hours-long standoff Wednesday afternoon and evening. The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says he had several warrants out for his arrest, including a felony warrant out of the Grand Junction Police Department.

Deputies in the Street Crime Unit originally spotted Chessani in the apartment complex parking lot earlier this afternoon. Chessani then took off to an apartment.

He was believed to be armed and dangerous. Residents in the apartment complex were evacuated, and nearby residents were asked to shelter in place.

Deputies were able to assist two people inside the apartments out safely, but Chessani refused to come out.

After repeatedly refusing to come out, a search warrant was obtained by deputies, and gas was deployed into the apartment. Chessani then surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

Nisley Elementary and Bookcliff Middle School were placed in a shelter in place, but it has since been lifted.
