MONTROSE, Colo. (KJCT) - Electric car company Tesla has its eye on Montrose to house a new supercharging station and the city is looking at using it as a tool for tourism.
The city says the downtown area would serve as the perfect break in the drive from Denver to Telluride. Travelers would stop to shop or even grab a bite to eat as their car charges for fifteen or twenty minutes.
“Originally, Tesla asked the City of Montrose to contribute $150,000 towards the project and that wasn’t something we thought was palatable to our taxpayers, so we’re working on ratcheting down those negotiations into the twenty five thousand dollar range. That’s what’s on the table at this point in time and what council is considering,” says director of business innovation and tourism, Chelsea Rosty.
The city says they're hoping to have a decision from city council on the financial aspect in a couple months.
