Fire Department shares tips on Christmas Tree safety

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A Christmas tree can catch fire in about 30 seconds and although Christmas tree fire are rather uncommon, they are much more deadly than other fires.

When you have a real Christmas tree how do you know if it’s dangerous.

“If your family chooses a real Christmas tree this year, we have a couple of tips. One is water it every day and make sure it doesn't get dry. If at any point you touch the tree and all the needles fall off, its time to get a new tree,” said Ellis Ellis, the communications specialist with the fire department.

The Fire Department has a few Christmas safety tips for the public.

- Always turn of your Christmas tree light when leaving your house or before you go to bed
- Keep all decorations away from open heat sources, like fireplaces and space heaters
- Water your tree every day
- Practice your escape plan, with your children and guests
