21st annual Mike the Headless Chicken festival kicks off
The 21st annual Mike the Headless Chicken Festival happening this weekend in Fruita.
The festival is to honor a chicken and its will to survive. Back in 1945, a Fruita resident wanted a chicken dinner, and so, he cut off the head of a chicken, but it survived. Mike the headless chicken became an attraction, and a Fruita icon. He survived 18 months without a head.
"Well, we started this festival 21 years ago and it was brought about to bring awareness to the citizens of Fruita about our unique history and it quickly went national and international," said Tom Casal, Recreation Superintendent for the City of Fruita.
The festival starts Friday night with a concert and will continue Saturday with a 5k run, disc-golf tournament and a wing eating contest.
