20 years later: Being a student at Columbine High School

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- For many, time stopped for Columbine after 13 people were shot and killed on April 20, 1999. But for the students who have gone through the school since, that's very much not the case.

I was one of those students. I graduated from high school in 2014. But I'm not the only Columbine graduate who made their way to the Western Slope.

"I miss it a lot," Laura Huwa, Columbine graduate in the class of 2015, said. "It's a lot different being at college. I think that's just because it was the Columbine community."

Aaron Bollwahn graduated just last year. For him, the move away from a tight-knit community has been a tough one.

"Many people think that you go to Columbine, 'oh that’s tragic,' but the atmosphere in the school is just superb," Bollwahn said. "It’s awesome. Not one person feels left out. That school is like one big family. Nobody feels left out.
