GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - On Thursday, Colorado Mesa University held a Veterans Day ceremony on campus by the Veteran Memorial. The Veteran Memorial on campus was built in 2015 and has become a big part of the CMU family.

The day began with student veterans meeting at the memorial and after they enjoyed a meal together. Student veterans shared their stories, the challenges, and benefits of being a veteran.

One woman, a student veteran who served 13 years in the Air Force, spoke about the difficulties of being discharged and what life is like afterwards.

“So while you are in the military, doesn’t matter what branch you’re in, there’s that sense of family, that sense of camaraderie. And when you get out, it’s gone. Instantaneously. As soon as you leave that base, it’s done,” said Sophia Hayner, a CMU student veteran.

Hayner mentioned that veteran suicide is a real thing and she is happy to be the president of the Student Veterans Association in order to help others and give them the resources they need.

If you are a student veteran at CMU, you can visit the Veteran Services Office in Houston Hall, Room #121 to get connected.
