The Atlantic is assigned six lists of names, with one list used each year. Every seventh year, the first list begins again.
The only exception is if a storm is so deadly or costly that any future use could be seen as inappropriate. If that occurs, the offending name is stricken from the list and another is selected to replace it at an annual meeting by the naming committee.
