Beyonce Giselle Knowles was born on Sept. 4, 1981 in Houston.
She started singing at an early age, performing in local talent shows.
Beyonce’s career broke out with Destiny’s Child, an all-female singing group that was managed by her father, Matthew Knowles.
Destiny’s Child recorded hits that included “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name.”
Beyonce made her acting debut in 2001 when she starred in MTV’s “Carmen: A Hip Hopera.” She then starred alongside Mike Myers in “Goldmember” in 2002.
Beyonce released her first solo album, “Dangerously in Love,” in 2003.
Her debut album won five Grammy Awards.
Beyonce released her second solo album, “B’Day” in 2006. The album included the hits “Irreplaceable” and “Beautiful Liar.”
Her biggest acting role came in “Dreamgirls,” where she starred alongside Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy.
Beyonce married rapper Jay-Z in 2008 in New York.
In 2008, Beyonce released “I am … Sasha Fierce.”
The album included the hits “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” and “If I were A Boy.”
Beyonce performed at President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Ball in 2009, where she sang Etta James’ “At Last.”
Beyonce has also dabbled in fashion. She and her mother run a clothing line called House of Dereon.
She also has her own fragrance, Heat.
Beyonce dropped her father as her manager in 2011. The partnership ended after Beyonce was criticized for performing a private concert for Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi in 2010.
Beyonce donated her fee from the event to victims of the Haiti earthquake.
After numerous pregnancy rumors, Beyonce confirmed she and Jay-Z were expecting their first child in 2011. She showed off her baby bump at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, was born on Jan. 7, 2012.
To protect their privacy during Beyonce’s delivery, the celebrated couple rented out a floor of the hospital.
