GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The regional wresting tournament is coming up this weekend and teams throughout Colorado have their eyes on becoming a placer in the top four to earn a trip to the state championships.
In 2A, the Paonia Eagles have long been a dominant force in wrestling, and they remained the number one team in the 2A ranks all season long. Six of their athletes heading to regionals go in as the top seed earning that first round bye, including two-time state champion Jesse Reed.
Olathe's Trenton Piatt and Austin Shank enter as the number one and two seed respectively after placing at state in 2013. Once again the Pirates will be well represented in 3A.
Jumping up a class into 4A where we first find 6th-ranked Palisade. Reigning state champion Dalton Hannigan suffered from an ankle injury early in the season, but he was back in no time and now enters regionals as the number one seed.
The hosts of regionals - 4A's 9th-ranked Montrose Indians - come ready with four of their athletes entering the tournament in the top 5 seeds for their weight class
Class 4A at Montrose High School, Feb. 15-16
Class 3A at Middle Park High School, Feb. 14-15
Class 2A at Grand Junction High School, Feb. 14-15
Just the top four placers in each weight class in each region qualify for state.
