GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Suplizio Field was buzzing again Saturday night, as the Rockies had their official unofficial kickoff to the 2014 season: an exhibition with the Denver Generals.
The Rockies struck first in the bottom of the first, then followed up with a six-run second inning, led by a couple of returners in Wesley Jones and Dom Nunez.
Grand Junction cycled most of their players into the game over the nine innings, including two of their 2014 draft picks Max George and Wesley Rogers.
Former CMU Maverick Garrett Carpenter, who tried out for the team Saturday morning and was invited to pitch in the game, collected the save in the 9th inning, striking out the side.
Grand Junction held off the Generals for the 9-8 win.
The Rockies travel to Ogden, Utah for their season-opening series against the Raptors Monday through Thursday, before returning for their home-opener against Idaho Falls on Friday.
