Regional Wrestling Preview: Central Warriors

By  |

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Central Warriors came into the season as the reigning Southwestern League champs, but they knew it wouldn't be an easy road to the top.

They lost a huge part of their team to injury and a handful of others to a different athletic focus. So from day one they were in a hole needing to prove themselves and slowly but surely the young team has.

Newcomers to varsity have stepped up in their first year in high school while the few seasoned athletes stepped in to carry a bigger load and lead the Warriors.

Now regionals are just a couple days away, and the team that sent six guys to state in 2013 is ready to hold their own.

"We started out real young, always getting beat a little bit," said freshman Riley Garner-Orr. "Then when our confidence got a little bit up, we started winning a little bit more, got a little confidence up, and I thought it was great to see them all do that."

"I think we have a really hard work ethic in here, so we just keep improving and improving," said senior Isaac Bair. "When the end of the year comes up we have a lot of underclassmen step up to the plate."

Central travels to Bear Creek High School for the regional tournament Friday and Saturday. Top four athletes in each weight class advance to state.
