GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The second time is the charm for three local soccer players. Tyler Speer, Dawson Springer and Tanner Holt were selected to the Olympic Development Program for the second straight year.
ODP works to provide a high-level of training to a select group of young athletes. Approximately 100 boys throughout the state tried out for the team and just 14 field players and 2 goalies remained after the final cuts.
Speer, Springer and Holt will represent Region 4's Colorado team set to play in the January championships in Phoenix, Arizona against the best teams throughout the US.
"I've been trying to put in work every day at my house, just doing foot skills and stuff, trying to get better to prepare for it," said Dawson Springer.
"It takes a lot of hard work and dedication and just making sure you're keeping your technical aspect good and keeping your touches good, and the speed of play is a lot quicker," said Tyler Speer.
"They're kind of weeding out the competition and looking at kids from all around the state," said Fire FC head coach Nick Gumpert. "It's not just this region, the Grand Junction area, these kids are competing against the top kids from Denver for those spots, and to know that these guys made the cut for the top 14 field players in the state of Colorado, that's a huge honor."
