GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Over the past year dozens of students have been hard at work writing poetry and today they got to show off their work.

Young poets at Scenic Elementary School celebrated the publication of their very own writing in a book called “The Tides of Kindness” and read their work aloud to parents and peers. The Writer in Residence, Jill Burkey, helped prepare the kids for reading in front of a crowd and started the morning off.

The Colorado Humanities' Writers In the Schools (WIT) program brought professional writers into Mesa County schools to inspire kids to try their hand at poetry. At the end of the program the students' work was published in an anthology.

"You know kids are people just like we are, they're just younger,” Burkey said. “They have stories, they have pain, they have joy and one of my main things with this program that I like to do is help kids find their voice, because they're important. They're stories are important."

Parents came to the library to watch their kids on stage. The WIT program also went to Grand Junction High School. They had their celebration at the beginning of the week.
