What to do with your Christmas trees

COLLBRAN, Colo. After the presents have all been opened and the decorations taken down, many may be wondering what's left to do with those Christmas trees.

You could always just throw them out, but there is another option – give it to the goats!

Teresa Fletcher and her husband run the Top of the Hill Ranch in Collbran, and they’re asking for your leftover trees.

"It's a great form of roughage for them because they have four stomachs,” says Fletcher. “Those needles go through there it helps to clean out their system."

This is only the second year the Fletchers have reached out to the community to give their goats a Christmas treat.

Once the tree is delivered, in less than an hour, the goats will entirely devour their meal.

"In the summer time they're out grazing and browsing and they don't get that in the winter time so they do enjoy it," says Fletcher.

But not all trees are fit for feed, only live, non-tinseled, non-flocked trees will do.

Top of the hill ranch will come pick up trees from residents in Mesa, Molina, and Collbran.

If you don't live in one of those places but do want to give your tree to the goats, The Little Mooo Ranch in Fruita and 5-R Livestock co. in Loma are also collecting donations.
