MONTROSE, Colo. A one-of-a-kind program that helps fathers struggling with unemployment is seeing extremely positive results.
Empowering Dad's Through HIRE has produced gainful employment for 86% of participants.
It began in July 2012 when Montrose County partnered with the Colorado Workforce Center in Montrose, putting local dads through readiness assessments, successful fatherhood programs and then on-site training with real employers.
The dads earn pay equivalent to a new hire at the business and then many of those sites hire the men on as real, full-time employees.
"We're trying to engage at least 45 dads in a 12 month period in some kind of meaningful job readiness," says program manager, Jon Merritt. "It could be the on the job training, it could be some job search skills, it could be that employment plan."
Just last month, twenty-five businesses in Montrose have provided training for thirty-three dads.
Organizers credit much of the program's success to the dedication of the dad's who participate and the partnership and guidance of the Workforce Center.
