GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Senator Udall hosted a community leaders meeting at CMU on Friday to discuss the drafting of a bill for the prospective status change of the Colorado National Monument.
The drafting of the bill is joint effort by Sen. Udall and Congressman Tipton.
Senator Udall hopes that the status change of the monument to national park will bring a much needed boost to tourism and small businesses in Mesa County.
"I think there's a way to move to national park status if the community wants to do that, that takes in the special and unique qualities of the Grand Valley," says Senator Udall.
The issue is very much divided among community leaders. Some of the larger concerns involve land and water regulations and land access restrictions that accompany national park status.
The bill is still in its drafting stage and Senator Udall hopes to create a public comment program via web for continued community input.
There is no release date for the draft, but the lawmakers hope to have it done by sometime this spring.
