GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Memorial Day is coming up and TripAdvisor took a survey that shows more people are planning trips for the holiday than ever before. Even though some residents are planning to leave the Western Slope, numbers show that many are making the Grand Valley their getaway.
Many local business owners are seeing an increase in customers from out of town and some hotels are already more than 80% booked for Memorial Day.
"The season is shaping up and our numbers for the summer are looking good," Richard Tally, owner of Wine Country Inn and Quality Inn said.
The TripAdvisor survey showed that 7% more Americans are planning to travel in the near future and many say they were motivated by this year’s harsh winter. Along with the area’s abundant agriculture and activities, the mild climate has also been a huge draw for several visitors.
"This is a wonderful place,” Tally said. “We have good weather and we get an early start on that weather. It's just a nice place to be."
Places like Wine Country Inn and Quality Inn have seen a steady increase in visitors from others states, most coming from Texas, Utah and California.
One couple from Utah makes the trip to Grand Junction often. Mark Wickman says he and his wife already have two foreseeable trips planned.
"It's just always been a very special place for us,” Wickman said. “It's kind of a nice size town. It's not too big, not too small and it has a lot to offer."
The Wickmans are in town this weekend and say they will be back again in July. Some of the things that attract them to the area are the peaches, Colorado National Monument and food.
"We're happy to see more people coming and staying in Grand Junction and we're hoping to be able to keep them for longer stays," Tally said.
