First, here are the items you should plan to snatch up.
Halloween costumes: You’ll find the best sales in November, but then it will be an entire year before you get to wear that Halloween costume. Buy costumes the week before Halloween for the biggest October price cuts, and be sure to look for both sales and coupons.
Denim: This is the time of year that stores are trying to get rid of the jeans they didn’t sell during back-to-school season. (Black Friday is also a good time to buy jeans, though.)
Plants: Plant a garden in October? Well, no, not quite. But you can stock up on bulbs and hearty shrubs now, store them in a warm place over the winter and be ready to go in the spring.
Cars: New models usually come out in September, so at this point, dealers tend to offer deals to get older models off their lots.
Here’s what to wait on.
Cold weather wear: You’ll find the best deals on cold weather clothes and accessories in January. If you absolutely need something before then, try to wait until Black Friday sales.
Cookware: Wait until you’re closer to Thanksgiving to find the best deals on cookware and small kitchen appliances.
Big appliances: New models of washers, dryers, fridges and other appliances do come out in September and October, but manufacturers don’t usually offer many discounts until November.
Electronic gadgets: Eying a new TV, laptop, camera, mp3 player or phone? Wait for Black Friday, when you’re much more likely to find better deals.
However, there are two items that fall into the electronic gadgets category that might be worth looking at now. They are:
HDTVs: Black Friday will still probably be your best bet for a new TV set, but there have been some good deals on HDTVs recently. Dealnews.com recomends looking for sets discounted to $230 to $290 to get the best deals now.
Certain laptops: There have been a lot of deals on 15-inch Core i5 Ivy Bridge systems, according to dealnews.com. But with Windows 8 and the first generations of several hybrid models coming out at the end of October, prices for laptops in general are likely to start climbing at the end of the month.
