Turnout for municipal elections not breaking records

MESA COUNTY, Colo. Three of the four municipalities with elections on Tuesday in Mesa County had marijuana questions on their ballots.

Even though Grand Junction didn't have an election, the importance of Tuesday's results could affect everyone.

A lot of people didn't realize Tuesday's significance.

"I didn't know there was an election going on," Mackenzie Dyer, Resident.

"I had no clue there was an election," Cierra Wareham, Resident.

While others were more aware.

"Yes I know there's some elections coming up," Milton Meharg, Resident.

Although the hotly debated topic of marijuana was left in the hands of Fruita, Debeque and Collbran voters, the amount of people who turned in their ballots aren't breaking any records.

In Fruita, where there was one question about pot shops and one about a tax on retail sales, only about 3,000 out of the 7,000 ballots that were sent out have been returned. Officials said that's average for this election.

Debeque and Collbran's questions also ask if retail stores should be allowed within city limits.

Officials in Debeque haven't reported a huge turnout. As of last night, 111 ballots were cast and they said they don't expect much more today.

Collbran has received 110 ballots, which is more than the 107 in the last municipal election and officials said the slight increase is likely due to the ballot question.

Palisade's turnout is hard to tell according to the Elections Office because the one question on their ballot - about the way ordinances will be published - is not a highly debated issue.

Regardless of the topics, taking part in what's going on in your neighborhood is key.

"It's always good especially if you are within that municipality because it will affect your community every election no matter how small is important to participate in," Sheila Reiner, Mesa County Clerk and Recorder.

Mesa County partners with all the municipalities to help with the layout and programming of the ballot. The elections office in Grand Junction counted all the ballots from the four cities.
