Trashing the tree and eliminating electronics

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. December 26, a lot of folks to begin their "out with the old and in with the new" procedures for the new year. A lot of times that begins with your Chistmas tree and old electronic items.

"We'll see probably upwards of 200-300 trees by the end of the year into the first of the year and then thereafter, we'll see trees in march believe it or not," said Cameron Garcia, the Mesa County Solid Waste Director.

It's a convenient and economical way to pitch the pine, as long as you've taken off all the decorations. Now's also the time of year where folks are getting rid of other old items.

"They receive new video game systems or a new television or upgrade to a new cell phone," Garcia said. "Individuals are needing to get rid of that so with the state of Colorado's new regulations, it is illegal to throw that material away into Colorado landfills."

With electronics retail growing each year and people seem to be able to upgrade their expensive gadgets every year

"You know this is one of those fields where things change constantly so they're making it price-wise a lot easier to do that- to upgrade each year when the new thing comes out," said Payton Grose of U.S. Tech.

That means in many cases, the old ones end up in the trash.

"That's the thing we've had a problem with. Trying to deal with those big old TV's and where to put them and how to get rid of them."

But back in July, a Colorado law went into effect stating that residents cannot dispose of most electronic waste in a landfill, but the Mesa County hazardous waste facility accepts Christmas lights and cell phones for free, and other e-waste at 42 cents per pound.

Another option is to take your old electronics to the E-Waste Recylcers of Colorado. They're located on South 7th St. between Winters and Noland...
