MESA COUNTY, Colo. In just the past three years school officials with District 51 say drug related expulsions have nearly doubled.
According to District 51, in the first semester of the 2010-2011 school year, there were 18 drug expulsions throughout the entire district and nine were at Central High School in Grand Junction.
In the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year, there have already been 34 expulsions, and more than a third of them were at Central.
"We've done training with staff on how to recognize signs and symptoms of it," says director of Safety, Security & Transportation for District 51, Tim Leon. "It could also be the fact that we're having more involvement with law enforcement as the SRO."
Leon says each school has their own reporting policies to parents for emergencies and other situations, but typically District 51 doesn't report to parents there was an arrest or other incident on campus unless it forces a lockdown or other major response.
