LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) A man accused of attacking his estranged wife with pepper spray and a stun gun at her Longmont home, kidnapping their young son and fleeing the country has changed his not-guilty plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Longmont Times-Call reports Monty Turner was set to go to trial in April along with his father, Ronald Turner, who is accused of helping with the kidnapping. But prosecutors say that because the insanity plea means Monty Turner now must undergo a mental health evaluation, Ronald Turner's case will have to move forward separately to make sure he receives his right to a speedy trial.

Monty Turner is accused of attacking his wife May 25 and fleeing to Canada with their 3-year-old son. He faces multiple charges, including kidnapping.
