D51 Schools have incentive for food drive

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The countdown is on for The Salvation Army's Food Drive in need of thousands of pounds of food to stock the shelves.

They need hot or cold cereal, pancake mix, syrup, hearty soups, mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, tuna and canned meats.

To help kick the drive into high gear, Burton Orthodontics is offering a hefty incentive. The dental group is donating $1,000 to the local school that collects the most canned food.

"We see a big need to fight hunger in our community and also a big need to fight education in our community so we thought we could put those two together," said Melanie Steele of Burton Orthodontics.

The Salvation Army is hoping to raise more than 60,000 pounds worth of food this holiday season. Presently, we are below half of that at 29,835 pounds.
