A series of car break-ins is leaving owners waking up to missing belongings and a bed of broken glass.

Tanya Stuckman works at the Glass Brokerage, a Grand Junction company that repairs broken windows. It's normal for the business to repair one window every 90 days, but recently, it has seen a spike in customers needing the same repairs. Stuckman said, "In the past 30 days, we've seen 12 different break-ins... cars coming in with broken door glasses."

Stuckman also said, "We are even having customers who are getting hit 2 or 3 times. They are getting both cars in their driveway." Just a couple days ago, a women's purse was stolen after thieves broke through her passenger door window. She said she lost a $1,000 worth of items, but also had to pay nearly $300 to repair the window.

From October 1st through November 15th, the Grand Junction Police Department has received 75 reports of cars broken into. In 2012, the total was 630 reported break-ins. Public Information Officer for the Grand Junction Police Department, Kate Porras, said "Thieves are usually looking for easy targets. If they go decided that they are going to smash the window to actually get into the car. Often times, it's because there's a purse or a wallet in plain site or other valuable items in plain site."

Recently, the break-ins have been taking place between 12th Street and 28 Road from Main Street to Orchard Avenue. However, Porras said break-ins can happen anywhere and it's important to be careful about where you leave your valuables. "There's a couple of things that people can do to avoid becoming a victim. Put away all of your valuables, don't keep them in your car if possible, but it you are going to keep them in your car, make sure they are not in sight," said Porras.
