Workforce Center posts fewer seasonal job openings

Mesa County still has some of the highest unemployment numbers in the state.  But from November through January, there's hope that more people will get jobs… at least for the holidays.

Its slim pickings when it comes to the seasonal jobs posted with The Mesa County Workforce Center.  In the past two months there have been 38.  Employment specialists say a few years ago there would've been a lot more.

Suzie Miller, with Mesa County Workforce Center, says many people who do land these jobs hope to turn them into full time work.

“Anytime that someone is employed it seems like they have a better chance of getting that next job,” Miller said.  “They work hard and that seasonal job turns into regular employment or they are employed and it looks better as they fill out other applications for future employment.”

Nationwide, retailers are expected to hire around 600,000 seasonal workers for the holidays. That’s according to estimates by the National Retail Federation.

The Workforce Center says most businesses did their seasonal hiring back in October, but some stores and restaurants are continuing to post temporary job openings.
