The Air Force Academy is evacuating more than 2,100 residents on its grounds, as a wildfire burns homes in northwest Colorado Springs.
Fire officials say 65 mph gusts fueled the fire in triple-digit temperatures Tuesday.
The fire has burned several homes, but Colorado Springs Fire Chief Richard Brown says "many, many homes" also have been saved.
It has burned across more than 9 square miles.
El Paso County sheriff's officials have ordered an estimated 32,000 people to leave, and the Air Force Academy is evacuating families from two main housing areas. Academy officials say an area that houses cadets wasn't immediately evacuated. A new class of 1,045 cadets had been scheduled to report Thursday.
Meanwhile Boulder County authorities are fighting a 200-plus-acre wildfire amid extreme fire conditions.
