GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -

A fire that started in an attic portion of 2937 Wellington Avenue has caused extensive damage to the home.

The call first went out around 11:30am.

Several engines responded to the scene and began cutting holes into the sides of the building to gain greater access to the flames, which had erupted in an attic area.

The Grand Junction Fire Department tells KJCT News 8 that the flames were difficult to access initially in that attic area, making it difficult for crews to quickly extinguish the flames.

While nobody was inside the rental home at the time of the blaze, the fire department tells us that four pets were inside, two cats and two dogs.  They were all found and are alive.

At this point, the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, but investigators believe the fire started on the outside of the home and extended into the attic.

Damage is considered to be "significant".
