UPDATE: Suspect in SWAT standoff in custody, identified by law enforcement

A home invasion ends in a SWAT standoff. The suspect is now in custody and has been identified as Chad Walker Evans, 23, of Delta, Colo.

Evans has been charged with Second Degree Burglary, Theft, Robbery, Fraud - Identity Theft, Second Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, Second Degree Criminal Trespass, and Driving with a Canceled/Denied Drivers License.

Ben Barnes with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office says that the mugshot and affidavit for Evans may be available tomorrow.

The situation occurred when authorities surrounded a Grand Junction building, searching for a man who allegedly stole a car in Glade Park.

The SWAT standoff lasted hours.  Authorities had just executed a search warrant on the home, using tear gas to clear it, when Evans came out.

Despite being told to stay inside their homes, several neighbors watched as it all unfolded.  Some saying they could hardly believe what they saw.

"I’ve seen SWAT strapping up, getting bullet proof vests, and guns coming out of every car," Carlos Robles said.  "It’s like Black Ops coming to life. There are guns here and its something that we're not use to seeing.”

Early Wednesday afternoon, people saw a man run from a car to an abandoned building a couple blocks away, carrying an armful of items.  Thinking it was suspicious, they called police.

Kate Porras, with the Grand Junction Police Department, says, "As officers responded they realized it was the same car that was stolen on Glade Park."

Authorities believed the alleged robber was armed and barricaded inside that building, prompting a SWAT standoff.

The neighborhood was given emergency notifications and some homes were even evacuated.

"They said everyone just stay inside. There’s a dangerous man with guns out,” Robles said.

"The description we had is a white man probably around six feet tall,” Porras said. “We’re also told that man may have some sort of tattoo or marking on his face, near his nose."

Evans was gassed out of the abandoned building and is now in police custody.

Although some officers were able to clear the scene, others stayed to execute the search warrant.

An emergency notification is going out to the residents to let them know that the suspect is in custody.
