Two high school seniors save woman's life

Two high school seniors are being called heroes for saving Elaine Hill’s life after she slipped on a trail and hit her head.

Kayla Warren and Grace Van Devender say it's nice to get credit for doing the right thing, they say they still don't see themselves as heroes.

"If you see someone that's hurt you go and help them,” Kayla Warren said. “It's just what the good thing to do is I guess."

The girls have been friends since freshman year. The two girls were out earlier this month shooting pictures for a photography project.

"We decided last minute to go to this trail that was near my house instead of across New Castle where I wanted to go in the first place," Warren said.

And it was on the trail where the girls witnessed an elderly woman fall and hit her head.

"Well she was barely moving at all and she wasn't responding or anything and all the sudden we were just like oh I need to call 911," Grace Van Devender said.

The girls didn't plan on taking their cell phones with them originally, but something changed their minds.

"Totally up to God, he totally gave us that whole little thought to bring them," Warren said.

Van Devender says she was on the phone with dispatchers trying to get the woman help, but they were getting frustrated because the girls didn't know their exact location.

"Finally we were luck because one the police officers was from New Castle and knew where we were talking about so he's the reason they got up there and everything," she said.

But Elaine Hill says she was saved by these two young ladies, and she calls them her guardian angels now.

Ironically this week at Coal Ridge High School it's homecoming week, and Monday was superhero day. Even though Grace and Kayla think of themselves as normal high school seniors, to Elaine and the people in New Castle these girls are out of this world.

"We were just up there going to take pictures for my photography thing,” Warren said. “We weren't planning on saving anyone."

"It's really nice but like we were just there at the right time, we weren't really heroes," Van Devender said.

Both girls are looking forward to graduating high school in the spring and heading off to college. 

They both plan on staying in touch with Elaine.
