LAYTON, Utah -

A traveling salesman has been arrested on suspicion of raping a Layton woman who he was trying to sell a magazine subscription.

David Allen Smith is being held in the Davis County jail Monday on rape and burglary charges.

Layton police Sgt. Jeff Roderick says 29-year-old Smith was going door-to-door Wednesday when he unsuccessfully tried to sell magazines to a 24-year-old woman who answered the door.

The woman says Smith asked for a drink of water, then walked into the house uninvited.

Roderick tells The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/PW1qcb ) the woman apparently decided to make a purchase and went to her bedroom to get her wallet. Smith reportedly followed her into the room and raped her.

Smith allegedly told police he had sex with the woman, but it was consensual.
