COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT, Colo. -

Between June 3-5, several cars were broken into at the Monument Canyon Trail Head at the Colorado National Monument. Taken from these cars were valuables like credit cards which were then used at several area stores.

A Fruita man was arrested in connection with the thefts and is now facing state and federal charges.

Monument Superintendent Joan Anzelmo says that they have one or two break-ins every year on the Monument and that it pays to be vigilant. She suggests that instead of hiding valuables, you take them with you. Often, criminals can spot common hiding techniques. She also asks that hikers in the area be aware of suspicious behavior. If you see something strange, contact park authorities or local law enforcement.
