GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -

Local law enforcement carved pumpkins today for a good cause.

They’re helping out cadets in training with their final service project before graduation.

The project is "Carving for Cans".  It’s put on by the Western Colorado Peace Officer Academy.

People came out to the Lincoln Park Barn to carve pumpkins with police officers and cadets.

All it cost to participate was a canned food donation.

The food collected from will be given to Latimer House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Cadet Chad Simpson says, “We really like what they do so we are just trying to support them. We are just trying to do something that involves the community.”

All the pumpkins were donated by Studts and Moon Farms.

There’s no word yet on how much food the cadets collected, Saturday.

They didn't go into the service project with a specific goal but say every donation helps.
