GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -

For the 8th year in a row, a local organization is asking the community to help needy kids in Mesa County.

SPUNK, as the drive is called, stands for socks, pajamas and underwear for needy kids.

Gretchen Haynes of D & G AutoCare started this organization and says most people donate the usual items such as shirts, jeans, and shoes, but the items that people usually don't think about are socks, pajamas, and underwear.

That's why this organization started and specifically targets these items.

“It started with one of our customers who was with social services, with the foster care program. She was a placement director with foster care. She made me know of the need and she says they get more children that come in during the holidays than any other time of the year” said Haynes.

Haynes says there will be several drop off locations throughout the Grand Valley including Catholic Outreach, the Latimer House and District 51's R.E.A.C.H. Program.

The cut off date for donations is December 15th to ensure the kids get their items by Christmas.
