As several Colorado homes are evacuated, officials here on the Western Slope want to make sure you and your pets are prepared for a disaster.
A Mesa County Animal Service urges all pet owners to plan ahead.
Because many Red Cross shelters don't accept pets, Animal Services says you need to have a safe place to take your pets in an emergency situation.
Authorities say having a plan will get people, and their pets, out of harms way quicker.
“If you get a warning for an evacuation put your pets inside and make sure you know where they're at,” animal control officer, Justin Manly, said. “Potentially put them in a kennel so they're ready to go.”
Animal Services says to make sure all cats and dogs are wearing collars with up to date identifications.
