Post Office changes impact support sent to troops

A local non-profit isn't happy about new postal rates and changes in the way people ship.

Operation Interdependence sends packages to military troops abroad.

Over the weekend it found out the boxes it typically sends are now considered oversized, meaning the cost to ship each box doubled.

To combat the financial burden, volunteers are re-packaging in smaller boxes.

The new process is taking the non-profit more time, effort, and money to adapt to the unexpected change.

“Our main objective is to serve fifty troops at one time. With new regulations we may not get out shipment out this month,” Karon Carley, with Operation Interdependence, said.  “That means there are 2,500 of our troops somewhere around the world that will not receive anything from home, from Operation Interdependence this month.”

One of the biggest concerns with the new regulation is the impact it will have on troop morale.

Operation Interdependence says it's trying to make the best of an aggravating situation.

It’s required to ship all military packages through the United States Postal Service.
