A new mortgage program is giving troubled homeowners a chance to stay in their homes.

The Grand Junction housing authority initiative is called the Mortgage Reinstatement Program. 

It aims to assist homeowners struggling to make payments on their mortgage after a financial hardship.

The Housing Authority is currently accepting and processing applications.

It also has experienced counselors that can meet with homeowners free of charge, to help figure out an appropriate solution.

"We have three full time certified housing counselors who have served hundreds of homeowners helping them through the process, with a very high success rate, usually an excess of 90 percent of clients that meet with us, go through the process with us and do the work we ask them to do are available to avoid foreclosure," said Amy Case of the Housing Authority.

The housing authority also cautions homeowners to watch out for scammers who may want to take advantage of this new program.

She says no one should charge you for assistance and advises people to go directly to the Housing Authority.
