GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -

It's been in the works for over 10 years, and now finally the palisade fire station is ready.

Firefighters and volunteers told us that they're extremely excited to call the station their new home.

Now firefighters have a place to store all their equipment, as well as a place to study, sleep and even cook.

Offices, bunks, and five truck bays are all included at the new station located at 341 West 7th Street.

Palisade Fire Chief, Richard Rupp, says he's been waiting for this day for a long time.

“We're very excited; I've been waiting on it longer than anybody here. we decided to use the existing facility that we have, which the library that was in here that was part of the school, east valley school, and i do have to say i did go to school in this building,” said Rupp.

Rupp added that keeping all firefighting equipment inside and at one location will reduce wear-and-tear on district equipment.

Centralizing the crew quarters also creates easy access to the highway, allowing them to avoid downtown traffic.

Rupp says all of these elements will help reduce response times.

The project took 1.8 million dollars to finish.

Rupp was happy to say it was built without borrowing any additional funds.

If you'd like to check out the new fire station, they'll be giving complete tours at their open house tomorrow from 10 am to 4 pm.

The new station is located at 341 West 7th Street.
