For the last three years, Mesa County has seen an increase in the number of suicides.

In 2012 there were 47 certified suicides in the area. That’s three more than the previous record set in 2011.

Colorado West Mental Health says the increase has been steady.

Its crisis hotline is seeing the number of calls grow by the hundreds.

“Are people feeling more comfortable asking for and getting help? That would be a great explanation and one we hope for,” Michelle Hoy, with CWRMH, said. “Or are more people in crisis and needing assistance?”

CWRMH hopes to get treatment for people who are distressed or suicidal before police or emergency crews respond.

Already this year, Mesa County coroners are investigating several suicides.
